What you need to start
Before you enroll, make sure you meet these basic requirements. They’re in place to ensure you’re ready for the work and to protect the people you’ll care for.
You must be at least 18 years old
A valid government-issued ID and proof of residency in Hawai’i are required to enroll in the program.
A clean background check is required
We conduct a background check as part of the admissions process. Some convictions may disqualify you from working as a CNA in Hawai’i.
Physical exam and health history
You’ll complete a basic physical exam and provide your health history to ensure you’re fit for the physical demands of patient care.
Current immunizations required
You’ll need proof of vaccinations including flu, COVID-19, and other immunizations as required by Hawai’i healthcare facilities.
TB test must be clear
A negative tuberculosis screening is mandatory before you begin clinical practice in any care setting.
CPR certification recommended
While not always required at enrollment, having current CPR certification before you start will strengthen your candidacy and prepare you for the work.
Skills
What you’ll learn in the classroom
Every skill matters when you’re caring for another person. MECHA Train teaches you the fundamentals that make you a confident, competent CNA from day one.
Vital signs
You’ll learn to take and record blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration accurately. These measurements tell the story of how your patient is doing.
Activities of daily living
Bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting. You’ll master the skills that help people maintain dignity and independence in their everyday lives.
Patient communication
Listening and speaking with respect and clarity builds trust. You’ll learn how to talk with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
Infection control
Hand hygiene, proper use of protective equipment, and safe practices protect your patients and yourself. These habits save lives.
Training
Learning by doing in real care settings
Classroom knowledge becomes real skill when you practice with actual patients under the guidance of experienced instructors. You’ll work in local care homes and facilities where you’ll see the work that matters.
